In order to enable a convenient and portable operation, many Artec scanners can be powered by a lithium-ion (Li-ion) or a lithium-polymer battery. In some cases, the battery can be purchased as an optional accessory (e.g. for Artec Eva and Artec Spider scanners), while in other cases, it is included with the scanner (e.g. with Artec Leo and Artec Ray scanners).
Lithium batteries are considered hazardous materials, therefore extra precautions must be taken when transporting batteries together with your scanner onboard an airplane.
There are different regulations regarding the transportation of Lithium batteries promulgated by different authorities. The restrictions are usually dependant on battery capacity, as specified by its Watt-hour (Wh) rating. This rating is labeled on the battery itself and should be presented to the responsible authorities upon request.
Here are the applicable specifications for the lithium batteries supplied by Artec:
|Scanner type||Battery Wh capacity|
|Artec Eva, Spider, Space Spider MH, MHT||73 Whr (portable power bank)|
All lithium batteries supplied by Artec fall into the "below 100Wh" category.
In general, the following restrictions are applicable:
- batteries should be transported in the carry-on baggage
- if the battery is installed inside the scanner, the scanner should be completely turned off and protected from accidental activation
- if the battery is not installed inside the scanner, the battery terminals should be protected by the manufacturer’s packaging or covered with tape and placed in separate bags to prevent short circuits
- damaged or defective batteries cannot be transported by air
Please note that additional restrictions could be imposed by local authorities or the airline itself, so make sure to verify the applicable requirements for flying with lithium batteries with your specific airline.
