A baby’s head to make an orthotic helmet

This article will guide you through the most optimal workflow to 3D scan the infant’s head.

 

Main challenges:

  • uncontrollable head movements
  • some babies tend to follow the movements of the 3D-scanner with the corresponding movement of their heads :)

 

The optimal workflow

Check our screenshots, which are posted below, we've asked the person, whom we captured as a reference, to tilt and move his head during our 3D-scanning session.

As you can see, even if your scans contain the head movements, they can be easily processed in Artec Studio.

3D-scanning tips

  1. For faster and easier 3D scanning experience, use "Geometry + Texture" scanning mode
  2. Start with the face: scan it only once
  3. Always keep either the shoulders or the back in the field of view
  4. Don’t forget to scan the top of the head itself

The resulting scan data may look a little bit chaotic, especially if the scanned baby moves his/her head much.

Post-processing tips

 

Step 1: Switch Fine Serial Registration algorithm to the "Geometry only" mode

 

Step 2: Erase the shoulders and the back (marked red on the picture below).

The shape of the head remains unchanged despite the movements, so it can be easily reconstructed after erasing the shoulders.

 

Step 3: Run Fine and Global Registration to reconstruct the shape of the head and to align raw 3D-frames in your scans according to each other.

Step 4: Run fusion (either sharp or smooth) to build a 3D mesh:
